Heath Wesley Givens, 1973–2024

Heath Wesley Givens passed away in Crosbyton, Texas, on January 18, 2024, at the age of 50. Heath was born on April 25, 1973, in Lubbock, Texas, to Preston and Lucinda Givens. As a child, Heathspenthistimerunning around the farm and traveling with his sheep to various stock shows alongside his sister, Kandice. In school, he was an avid member of FFA, finding himself involved in many stories that will be told for years. He also was heavily involved in the Spur Bulldog football team, as the team’s beloved quarterback and “Boomer.” Heath attended Spur ISD, graduating in 1991.

After graduation, Heath attended Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. After spending some time there, he then transferred to Texas Tech University, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in ag education and finished his student teaching under Mr. Burkett in Guthrie, Texas. He soon went on to earn a master’s degree in the same field from Tech.

From there, he returned to his hometown of Spur, Texas, to join the family business of farming alongside his dad. In 2003, Heath welcomed a daughter, Madison Brooke Givens, into the family. Six years later, another daughter, Weslyn Olivia Givens, was welcomed into the world. His girls were his joy. As the years passed, Heath enjoyed his time on the farm. While he faced his own struggles throughout the years, he is now at peace, which is the most joyous ending of all.

Heath is survived by his two daughters, Madison and Weslyn Givens of Spur; his mother, Lucinda Givens of Spur; his sister, Kandice Bell, and husband Warren Bell of Leander and their children, Appolynne and Ashton Bell; his uncle, Mickey Givens and Alexa Collier of Crosbyton; his aunts, Susan O’Brien of Abilene and Sue Givens of Wichita Falls; his cousins, Casey (Jamie), Kylyn (Rob), Kris (Shay), Eric (Melissa), Adam (Mallory), Jennifer (Jonothan), and Chad, and a multitude of other loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his father, Preston Wesley Givens; grandparents Melvin and Lena Givens and Al and Jo O’Brien; uncles Tommy O’Brien and Ted Givens; aunt Kathy Givens; and many other beloved friends and family that he will meet at the gates.

Visitation was held on Sunday, January 21, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Zapata Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the Spur Methodist Church in Spur, Texas, with Kermit Woolley officiating. Burial followed at Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Shad Harris, Scott Martin, Shane Parsons, Nored Lane, Craig Hamilton, Chad Morris, Emery Swenson, and Tye Maben. Honorary pallbearers were Dwayne Sexton, Julio Romero, Andy Garcia, Steve Riley, Bobby Baker, Benny Ball, Eric Swenson and Kirk Thomason.
