Convenience of gasoline returning to Dickens

Thursday, August 9, 2018

DEVELOPMENTS IN DICKENS Gasoline service is returning to Dickens with self-service pumps, and the business owners hope they’ll be open by Labor Day. Additionally, the Dickens Fire Department is planning on breaking ground on their new fire station in October.

When the city of Dickens’ only convenience store closed in February 2017, Jimbo Humphreys said, “We kept thinking that ‘someone would do something,’ so that we could have gas here.”

But, when February the following year rolled around, Humphreys and his sons, Matt and Will, decided, “If we didn’t do it, who would?”, he said.

Now, the Humphreys family are hoping that their self-service gasoline pumps will be ready for fueling by Labor Day 2018.

“We’re opening this business as really more of a public service, for the people who are on the highways,” Humphreys said.

The pumps will sell regular, unleaded and ethanol-free gasoline for cars and diesel for pickups and trucks. “Older cars need the ethanol-free gasoline,” Humphreys said, “so our pumps will have the kind of gas that all cars can use.”

All customers need to fill up at the unattended pumps will be a debit or credit card.

Suppliers will be monitoring the pumps electronically so that the service never runs out of fuel.

At launch time, in addition to fuel, the service will offer air for vehicle tires. “We’re probably going to expand this once we get it up and established,” Humphreys said
