Dickens fire station plans coming together

Thursday, August 9, 2018

After several years of gathering donations and making plans, the Volunteer Fire Department of the city of Dickens has almost 75% of the resources they need to build a new station, said Fire Chief Will Humphreys.

On one of the most prominent Highway 82 frontage lots, a sign notes the location of the planned fire station.

“A landowner in Dickens bought the property and donated it to us,” Humphreys said.

Funds raised for the new facility are “not quite a quarter of a million,” said the fire chief, who added that the size and design of the new station will “come down to what we can afford.” He said that it will have big overhead doors on the north and the south sides and a gear room.

Architectural renderings depict the VFD’s vision of the new facility.

“No taxpayers’ dollars will go into the creation of this new building,” Humphreys said. All the funds for the facility have come from donations from landowners.

Although no official groundbreaking has been set, Humphreys said he hopes to break ground in October 2018.
