SISD board discusses policies on cell phones, school meals, technology

Thursday, August 9, 2018

In its meeting Monday, July 30, the Spur Independent School District board approved keeping prices the same for meals for the 2018-19 school year.

The current fees for breakfast and lunch are as follows:

Lunch Breakfast

Elementary $2.25 Free

Secondary $2.50 Free

Employees $2.50 $1.00

Visitors $3.00 $1.00

The board discussed the 2018-19 Student Handbook, but no action was taken. According to information provided by superintendent Craig Hamilton, it is recommended by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) that the Student Handbook be reviewed and not adopted. If the board were to adopt the handbook, then every adjustment to the handbook throughout the year would take board action.

One of the discussion items from the Student Handbook was cell phone use. Effective in 2018-19 students will have to put cell phones away before starting each class.

In other action the board approved the Spur ISD Employee Handbook for the new year and the 2018-19 Technology Acceptable Use Policy. The technology acceptable use policy has to be reviewed annually for the district to comply with the federal Child Internet Protection Act.

The board also approved renewing the policy with TASB Risk Management for Property and Casualty Insurance, and it approved the 2018-19 Student Code of Conduct.

Also approved at the meeting was the Attendance Procedures Handbook and the agreement with Allied Compliance Services for both student and employees of the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing.

The board also approved setting the public hearing for the 2018-19 school year tax rate for August 27, 2018, at 6 p.m.
