At four in the morning Sunday, April 3, in the Willard Avenue frame house he shared with his invalid mother, Spur resident Jesse Starry heard “a big boom.” The sound roused him instantly from sleep.
LUBBOCK—South Plains Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up sent 39 volunteer fire departments each a check for $1,000, totaling a donation of $39,000 to departments that serve its members.

DICKENS 4H HONORS Dickens 4-H won a second place junior team award at the 2022 district meat judging contest last week. 4-H members included Allie Weiser, Grayson James, Rylee Foster, Calvin Chapmen and Maddee Foster.
PATTON 4-H HONORS Patton Springs High School students Melania Ramirez, Diezel Ramirez and Toryan Childers represented the Dickens County senior 4-H team and placed first at district competition in Duds to Dazzle. They will advance the state roundup in June.
MORE DICKENS COUNTY 4-H FASHION HONORS 1st place junior construction and cotton award winner was Calvin Chapman, and the team of Mackenzie Gardener, Jaydee Foster and Bucki Smith won 3rd place senior team.
Strawberries are always synonymous with spring. It’s certainly time to celebrate this popular berry. The produce sections have lots to offer, and the nurseries have wide varieties of plants if raising your own strawberries interests you.
