AWARD WINNER Patton Springs had a group of students who entered the public service announcement contest for Project Graduation through TxDOT. The student team consisting of Kinley Chandler, Tory Childers, Melania Ramirez, Michael Garza, Devon Reyna, Kyle Schledwitz, Holton Heuermann and Diezel Ramirez placed first, winning $2,000 for their school’s Project Graduation. By placing first, they are now entered in the State level competition. The school’s IT director, James Stephens, helped the students on the technical aspects of the video.

ON TO STATE Congratulations to everyone who competed in last week’s Area 13 TACS Academic Challenge Contest. Three Jayton teams will travel to the state contest in February. The overall winning team was from Jayton and each member of the winning team won a $500 scholarship. Members of that team were: Caydence Benedict, Joel Williams, and Cody Redding. JGISD faculty member Darla Harrison advised the groups with the Academic Challenge Contest.

JAYBIRDS STOP BULLDOGS The Jayton Jaybirds varsity boys basketball team defeated the Spur Bulldogs last Tuesday night in Jayton 59–45. The Jaybirds moved to 3–0 in district with a 48–18 Friday night win over Paducah.

Registration form shortage as deadline nears

AUSTIN—Less than a week remains before the Jan. 31 deadline to register to vote in the March 1 primary. While Secretary of State John Scott publicly assured Texas voters that “every single eligible Texas voter will be able to register to vote if they have not done so already,” the League of Women Voters on Friday threatened to sue his office if the nonpartisan group isn’t provided with additional voter registration forms.
