A community’s assets don’t just happen. They must be nurtured, protected and valued to be sustained.
The Spur Senior Center is more than just a place for older folks to get a bite of lunch (and it’s not just for older folks, it serves an affordable lunch to anyone who wants it.) The Center serves a sustenance more important than food, however. It provides connection and community.
Isolation and loneliness can debilitate a person no matter their age, but especially someone who may be retired and is slowing down a bit.
The Senior Center has been offering a weekday camaraderie of lunch out for a very affordable price for four decades (see our special coverage on the history of this community institution in The Texas Spur of Oct. 3, 2024). Consider the ease of not having to shop and prepare the meal, and it’s a bargain.
However, this week the Center’s board of directors has announced that they will be scaling down its services to three days a week—Tuesday through Thursday.
In the spirit of seeing the glass half full, we note that this is still a valuable service and one that we need to support to ensure that it continues.
Some communities—like Floydada, three times the size of Spur—have lost their Senior Center meal service. Yet some communities smaller than Spur—such as Matador—continue to have a robust weekday senior meal service. With our support, this vital instutition can be maintained.
Diners of all ages are welcome, at a slightly increased price, so take the opportunity to join your grandmother or a neighbor for lunch some day!
We understand that people work and have commitments and may not have the time to go and sit and have a midday meal out. But you probably all still eat. The Center offers easy, affordable and fast to-go options.
Most weeks, The Texas Spur on deadline days calls in an order that’s waiting on the front desk for us when we get there. We’re thrilled to have this option and support our community at the same time. (We are especially excited when it’s meat loaf day.)
This is the time of year when people make resolutions. Make a resolution to step up and support the Senior Center of South Dickens County with a donation or by regularly obtaining your midday meals from there.
Let’s make sure that Spur continues to have this valuable asset in our community.
