Ten area athletes—from Jayton, Spur and Patton Springs— will travel to Austin for the State Track Meet later this week. The 1A competition gets under way early Saturday morning at the Mike A. Myers Soccer and Track Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
Spur senior Jorden Zarate is no stranger to the Myers track complex in the state’s capitol. The last time a State track meet was held was in 2019, and Zarate, a sophomore at the time, scored a come-from-behind photo finish in the 3200 meter and set a new school record to win a State 1st place. (In 2020 the State track meet was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.)
Track fans will be especially watching the competition between Zarate and Guthrie’s Brandon Passman. At the Regional meet Passman and Zarate finished 1 and 2 respectively in the 3200m and 1600m runs.
Other area students competing this week at the State meet are: Boys 4x100 Meter Relay, Spur (Cory Hamilton, Craig Leary, Gunnir Bateman, Le’Zhane Walker); and Boys 4x200 Meter Dash, Spur (Cory Hamilton, Craig Leary, Gunnir Bateman, Le’Zhane Walker).
Those advancing in other races are Girls 100 Meter Dash, Brynn Yanez, Jayton; Boys 3200 Meter Run, Jorden Zarate, Spur; Boys 1600 Meter Run, Jorden Zarate, Spur, and David Reyna, Patton Springs; and Girls 800 Meter Run, Bucki Smith, Spur.
In field events, from Texas Spur County Katherine McGee, Jayton, will compete in shot put.
