On Thursday night in Blackwell, the #12-in-the-state Spur Bulldogs ran smack-dab into the #9 Irion County Hornets and got stung, 83-36.
Irion County jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first quarter, as Jordan Harrison took the handoff up the right sideline and dragged defenders with him all the way for the first touchdown of the game.
Spur answered back with a rushing touchdown by Cory Hamilton, with the point-after kick by Kayden Martinez good.
But in the second quarter the Hornets unfurled their passing game, as quarterback Trevin Coffell hit receiver Bo Morrow in the end zone, and the Hornets extended their lead to 30-16.
The Hornets’ air attack would prove the difference in the Bulldogs’ 83-36 loss. All total, Irion County would score five touchdowns in the air to Spur’s none.
Spur pretty much went toe-to-toe with the Hornets in the ground game, 275 yards for Spur to 326 for Irion County, but the Hornets’ passing game appeared to be too much.
Coach Tate Clark characterized the game candidly: “It showed us a lot of flaws. It’s not fun losing, but sometimes we have to play good teams and figure out where our issues are so we can get them corrected.”
Cory Hamilton and Ryan Davis both turned in 100 yardplus rushing games. Hamilton carried the ball 19 times for 169 yards, and Davis toted it 14 times for 101 yards.
Next week the Bulldogs travel to Motley County to play the Division 2 state championship runners-up. However, 2022 has not as kind to the Matadors, and graduations have left them with a rebuilding year, and they have lost to Ira and Knox City in the new season. It should be an interesting matchup.
