The Spur Bulldogs suffered their first lost of the season last Friday night as the No. 1–ranked Motley County Matadors came to Jones Stadium.
As the game started on the Dawgs Revenge Season the boys came out with all pistons firing, but it came down to a defensive battle with no score for either team in the first quarter. Taming the Matadors’ #4 Jake Richards appeared to be the Bulldogs’ top priority.
The Matadors struck first as the second quarter started with Richards scoring early. But the Bulldogs blocked the extra point, denying the Matadors a full score. The Dawgs answered right back with a pass by #11 Gunnir Bateman to #7 Nick Ortiz for Spur’s first score, and the extra point was good.
Spur’s one-two punch of #3 Le’Zhane Walker recovering a Matador fumble led to Cory Hamilton’s adding six more points.
Motley County would score again just before the half and the Dawgs would go into half time with a tied score 14–14.
When the second half began the Mats’ offense came out of the gate with six points, and the extra-point kick was good. The Bulldogs answered back when Walker ran for 15 yards in for six points.
It all fell apart for the Dawgs when the Matadors scored six unanswered times. Spur did attempt a score on a breakaway run by Walker that was called back on a holding penalty. The final score of 20–66 really didn’t tell the whole story of the Bulldogs’ fight against the No. 1 team in six-man ball.
Coach Tate told his team after the game that he was proud of them for making a game out of it—but also said to The Texas Spur, “We are not where we need to be at this point.”
“We hadn’t been tested this year,” said Tate. “I think that Motley County is one of the best teams in the state, and it showed where we were and what we need to work on. We had few injuries early on that we had to try and overcome.”
