4 Spur council positions, 1 school slot contested for May 1

Candidates’ forum Thursday night to give voters opportunity for questions

Spur voters are invited to get a unique glimpse into the positions on the issues, and the personalities running for local office this spring, in the third annual “Meet the Candidates” evening presented by the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce and The Texas Spur newspaper on Thursday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Spur Community Center.

Six candidates in contested city races — four for positions on the Spur City Council and two for the board of trustees of the Spur Independent School District —will take questions live in a town hall meeting with constituents.

“This forum is designed to give voters a chance to be heard,” said Texas Spur publisher Kay Ellington. “It allows them to ask the questions that they want answers to.”

High-profile issues in recent months in the city of 1,300 population have included providing law enforcement, improving water and sewer infrastructure and fire protection, providing animal control and shelter for strays, encouraging more transparency in local government, improving the downtown commercial district and attracting more residents and visitors.

School board matters, which reach beyond city limits to unincorporated parts of the county, often involve improving learning opportunities and school facilities.

The two-hour forum will give audience members a chance to pose these questions, and more, anonymously via index cards. Ellington, who will serve as moderator, expects helpful responses and productive ideas from all candidates.

Ellington added, “For three years we’ve done these local town hall meetings, and they seem to be growing in interest and attendance. In the past the rapport between voters and candidates have been characterized by good grace, down-home friendliness, and a bit of humor when it comes to sharing their ideas on city and school issues.”

Appearing at Thursday night's forum will be all candidates in contested races for Spur City Council and Spur School Board. See profiles on page 6.
