5-0 Jaybirds roll over Silverton

Make this the third straight week that the Jaybird offense has not been stopped on one single possession.

Make this the second straight week that the Jaybird defense has pitched a shutout.

Make the Silverton Owls the latest victim as the Jaybirds rolled Thursday night to a 46-0 mercy rule victory early in the 3rd quarter.

Silverton did threaten the Jaybirds early in the game. On the heels of two large penalties, the Owls found the ball spotted inside the Jayton red zone and looked poised to break up the shutout. However, it was junior Griff Reel who would slam the door intercepting a pass at the goal line and returning it near midfield. The Jaybird offense would do the rest, and the game would never be in question again.

On this night, despite the wind, it was the Jaybird passing game that rose to the occasion.

“Credit to Coach (Ryan) Bleiker for calling a great game?: said Head Coach Josh Stanaland. “He does a great job of taking what the defense gives us. Like you mentioned last week, we’re kind of pick-your-poison. We can go either way. We’ve got a great quarterback and great skill guys who can run and catch, and if the defense is going to do like they did tonight try and stop the run then we’ll throw it over their head. We feel like we can be pretty balanced offensively and it’s a pretty fun thing to be.”

As far as the defense is concerned, Stanaland noted, “I thought defensively we bent a little bit early more than we want to. We talk all the time about bleeding slowly and not giving up the big play and we feel like if we can make them snap it enough we’ll turn them over and we saw that. They were down deep in the red zone and Griff intercepts it and we were able to go score. But again, another pretty complete performance by our kids, proud of them.”

Sean Stanaland led the Jaybirds in passing going 6/7 for 129 yards and 3 TD, Justin Collins was the receiving leader with 3 catches for 57 yards and a TD. Jayce Rivera and Stanaland tied for the team lead with 9 tackles each.
