99th Annual Motley-Dickens Old Settlers Reunion and Rodeo to add youth rodeo this year

Roaring Springs will soon be filled with visitors for the 99th Annual Motley-Dickens Old Settlers Reunion and Rodeo. Events take place Thursday, August 25 through Saturday, August 27. An interactive theme park, food trucks and music are all expected to be part of the fun.

A drawing will be held on Saturday for handmade spurs and a buckle set by Matt Humphreys and Clint Martin. First place is the spurs; second place is a buckle and third place is a trinket. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. The drawing will be held Saturday during the rodeo.

Admission is free on Thursday, and tickets can be purchased at the gate on Friday and Saturday for adults. Admission for children under 12 will be free all weekend.

The kids’ theme park includes activities for older kids and little ones as well: inflatables, a mechanical bull for kids, a Meltdown game, and pedestal joust.

Food concessions will be available all three days, including Charlie Carter’s World Famous Goat Wraps.

Rodeo events will include a flag race for children and a barrel race open to all ages in the arena starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, followed by team roping. The RHAA Ranch Horse Competition starts at 9 a.m. on Friday for junior and senior youth classes and also includes wrangler, ranch hand, and cowboy class. A junior flag race, mutton bustin’ and junior Shetland bronc riding will take place on both Friday and Saturday. Some events are limited in the number of participants accepted. Yout events are hosted by Lonesome Dove Rodeo.

The Ranch Rodeo Invitational is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

A parade is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday after the slide roping events. A memorial service will follow. Kids of all ages can enter a washerpitching contest, and there will be goat-roping for 12 and under. And don’t forget the turtle race!

The “Old Folks’ Dance” is free on both Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m., with Chad Maines and Friends.

On Friday night Jody Nix and the West Texas Cowboys will perform for a 9:30 p.m. dance.

This year’s Rodeo Queen candidate is Kaygan Walker, the 12-year-old daughter of Steven and Britny Walker of McAdoo. She is the grandaughter of Benny and Zoe Robertson of Spur, Bill and Kathie Walker of McAdoo, and Ann Walker and the late Daryl Walker. Kaygan says she enjoys riding horses, raising bottle calves, playing sports, raising a garden, and riding mini broncs.

Kaygan is involved in the Dickens County 4-H, where she competes in livestock judging, Horse Quiz Bowl and the Dickens County Stock Show. She also competes in local horse playdays. She is a member of the Highway 70 Church of Christ.

When she grows up, she said, she hopes to find a job working with animals.
