A crowd of people made their way down to Swenson Park Monday night, June 26, excited to serve as extras in a music video for Lubbock-based Americana band Flatland Cavalry’s newest tune.
The song, “Last American Summer,” debuted June 30, but participants got to listen to the song a few days early. People of all ages were encouraged to attend, as they became part of the scene of a Fourth of July party, complete with roasted marshmallows, sparklers and fireworks.
Guthrie student Mackenzie Gardner said, “It was a very cool atmosphere, it felt like a real get-together.” A few townspeople had also been asked to be part of a shoot that took place downtown the day before.
The band received a true West Texas experience, with a dinner catered by T.C.’s Ponderosa prior to filming, and a stay in a few of our local VRBO homes. Drummer Jason Albers said, “We all grew up in small towns, so it felt like we were in our own hometowns. We thank y’all for having us!”
Between resets in filming, participants were able to talk and take photos with the band. “I’ve been a fan of them for such a long time!,” said Spur resident Karla Luevanos. “This was a once in a lifetime experience!”
Project director Adam Paul Stone, whose grandparents, Bob and Carlene Wright, were from Spur, and whose mother, Donna Dill, now resides in Dickens, chose the location and put out the call for extras a few days before. Stone had previously filmed a movie, “Four Eyes,” in Dickens in 2016 at Bill and Velma Stone’s place.
Spur eighth-graders Kymberleigh Lee and Raeli Rodriguez got to discuss interests and possible future plans with assistant producer Jillian, who answered all their questions about making it in the film industry.
