Jayton 71, Lorenzo 33
The 5-1A boys’ varsity basketball teams got the 2021 postseason playoffs off to a good start.
The Jayton Jaybirds have had another great year. They are 16–3 for the year, having only lost to District 5-1A nemesis Paducah in both the first and second rounds, and back in December were beaten by a 2A school, Farwell.
As the second seed, they drew third seed Lorenzo, who was 8–9 on the year and 6–4 in district.
Lorenzo came into the playoffs on a three-game losing streak.
The Jaybirds jumped out to a 11–5 lead at the end of the first quarter, and built on that lead every quarter, preventing Lorenzo for ever taking the lead. The Jaybirds won the bi-district championship 71 to 33.
Spur 45, Petersburg 33.
The Spur Bulldogs had to claw their way into the playoffs. A buzzer-beater three-pointer gave the third seed their playoff admission.
As third seed, the Bulldogs (6–6) drew second seed Petersburg, who was 8–2 in District 6-1A.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13–7 lead in the first quarter, but then Petersburg came roaring back and outscored Spur 8–5 in the second quarter. Spur took a scant 3-point advantage into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, at the end of the third quarter Petersburg had pulled within one point, and Spur was only ahead 25–24.
But, then the Bulldogs poured it on the fourth quarter, outscoring Petersburg 20–9 in the final quarter to win the game.
The Bulldogs beat Petersburg 45–33 to become the bidistrict champions.
