By last Tuesday’s 5 p.m. deadline, no write-in candidates had filed to be on the May 6 ballots of entities in the Texas Spur readership area.
Ballots are set, and Spur and Spur ISD, with all races uncontested, expect to cancel their elections. Resolutions will be required for official action at upcoming meetings by entities that have not yet had time to post such items on their agendas.
The City of Spur final slate is as follows: Mayor – Louise Jones, incumbent, unopposed Ward 1 (currently held by Fronye Morris, who is not running for reelection) — Elaine Harris, Spur attorney and accountant, unopposed Ward 2 – Don Wright, incumbent, unopposed Ward 3 – Rhea Melton, incumbent, unopposed For SpurISD, Cody Schmidt, a lineman for Cap RockTelephone, has filed to run for the At-Large, Place 6 seat formerly held by Barry Ferguson, who chose not to seek re-election.
The other board seat on Spur ISD’s ballot is Place 5, currently held by Matt Humphreys, who filed for re-election.
For the City of Dickens, the Mayor position, currently held by David Warren, and two at-large council seats are on the ballot: those currently held by Marie Mullins and Stephen Hart. Warren, the incumbent mayor, has filed for re-election and is running unopposed.
The two at-large city council seats have attracted three candidates, including incumbent Hart as well as David Wallace and Nancy Hale.
In other municipal elections, the following positions will be on the May 6 ballot.
For the City of Jayton, the Mayor position, currently held by George Chisum, and two at-large council seats are on the ballot, those currently held by Missy Redford and Kerry McGee.
Chisum has filed and is running unopposed.
Three candidates are running for the two at-large city council seats, including incumbents Redford and McGee, and one challenger, Mickey Alexander.
Jayton-Girard ISD has two atlarge board seats on the ballot, those currently held by B.J. Baldridge and Jeff Arnold. Arnold has filed for reelection, and Tiffany Ham and Matt Herzog have also filed as candidates .
The last day to register to vote is Thursday, April 6, 2023; early voting begins April 24.
