Ballots set for area city councils, school boards

Friday was the filing deadline to run for city hall in Dickens, Jayton and Spur, and for school board in Spur and Jayton. Patton Springs ISD is on a November election cycle, and their filing dates are in the fall. City and school elections will be held May 7.

The City of Spur will have a contested election in Ward 1, which is currently represented by Crystal Leary. Although Leary did not file for re-election, two challengers did file for the office, Kristy Price and Hope Ortiz.

Ward 2 is currently represented by Laidy Vasquez, who has filed for re-election.

Ward 3 is currently represented by Glenda White, who also serves as mayor pro tem, and who has filed for reelection.

In the city of Jayton, council seats are all at-large, but incumbents rotate through for elections every two years. On the ballot this year are incumbents Marsha Smith, Margo Clay and Teresa Benevides. All three incumbents filed for reelection, and have drawn no opponents.

The City of Dickens has three at-large city council positions on the ballot this year: councilmember Dillon Hale, councilmember Jesus Zarate, and councilmember Kevin Marshall. All three incumbents have filed for re-election and have drawn no opponents.

Usual precedent is that the city councils for Jayton and Dicken will in all likelihood cancel their elections at next month’s city council meetings.

In school board elections, three places are on the ballot for the Spur Independent School District. According to Superintendent Craig Hamilton, the school district was waiting until Tuesday to see if any write-in candidates filed to determine whether they needed to hold an election. At press time, there were three places on the SISD ballot, and three candidates. Place 3 is currently represented by Terri Wyatt, who has filed for reelection. Place 4 is currently represented by Rick Paschall, who did not file for re-election. Andrew Adams has filed for this place. The at-large seat is currently represented by Casey Smith, who filed for re-election.

In Jayton-Girard ISD, all board members are elected atlarge, but incumbents rotate through for elections every two years. On the ballot this year will be Connie Martinez, incumbent, and Cody Stanaland, incumbent. JGISD will hold an election—four candidates have filed and they are incumbent Connie Martinez and challengers Mario Rivera, Andy Vargas and Steven Collins. Incumbent Cody Stanaland did not file for re-election.
