The Texas State Bison Music Festival, also known as BisonFest, has announced the lineup for its September 24 event in Quitaque.
Headlining this year’s BisonFest will be newly formed country supergroup The Panhandlers. The group’s four members — Josh Abbott, John Baumann, William Clark Green, and the Flatland Cavalry’s Cleto Cordero — are acclaimed songwriters and road-tested frontmen in their own right. Together, they’re a true powerhouse representing some of Texas’ most popular musical exports, rolling their talents into a band whose homegrown country music revisits and revises the classic influence of West Texas.
Other acts appearing at the festival will be Mason and the Gin Line, the Dirty River Boys and the West Texas Exiles.
Proceeds from the Texas State Bison Music Festival go directly toward the restoration of the Official Bison Herd of the State of Texas. Located in Caprock Canyons State Park, the bison are direct descendants of the herd started by famed Cattleman Charles Goodnight in 1878.
Goodnight began the bison herd on his JA Ranch in an attempt to preserve the animals before they disappeared forever. Against all odds, one herd of genetic-related Southern bison have managed to survive all these decades. The Official Texas State Bison Herd represents the last remaining examples of the Southern Plains variety of bison.
