Spur’s Swenson Park welcomed visitors and barbecue aficionados last weekend for its fifth annual Big Dog BBQ Cook-off, an IBCA-sanctioned event that draws some of the top cooking teams in the Southwest to boost their points total over the season’s finish line.
Twenty-five teams took part this year, according to cook-off chair Betsy Arnold. Familiar faces and new cook teams alike competed in three official meat categories plus a Friday night steak, with prize money boosted by local donations.
The scoring system featured a new twist, according to judging staff. Tasting judges were asked to rate each meat in three categories—appearance, taste and texture. Scores were tallied swiftly by means of barcoded tickets.
In advance of Saturday’s judging, the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce held its Trade Day market in the park, and afterward, hosted a barn dance with music by the Clay Gibson Band of Levelland. Funds from the City of Spur’s hotel-motel tax receipts underwrote the event, allowing free admission.
Arnold also expresed thanks to Shelly Drennan Marshall, Gavin Arnold, the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce and others for their assistance.
Sponsors providing support were Argo Blockchain, Cap Rock Telephone, Dickens County Farm Bureau/Lexie Rowland, OutdoorChef Lubbock, Rolling Plains Title of Texas, South Plains Electric Cooperative, Inc., The Backdoor Inn/Joan Day, The Texas Spur and Zapata Funeral Home.
