For the sixth consecutive year, Spur’s Swenson Park has held its Big Dog Barbecue Cook-off—accredited by the International Barbecue Cookers Association (IBCA). Teams from all over the South gathered for one big barbecue showdown that allowed them to rack up points before the season ends June 30.

According to cookoff chair Betsy Arnold, 13 teams signed up and competed in three meat categories, and 10 competed in the Friday night steak category. Scoring for each category of meat was based on appearance, texture, and flavor. Prize money acquired from local donations was awarded to the top three teams in each category.

In addition to the cookoff excitement, a dozen vendors participated in a farmers’ and crafters’ market hosted by Galaxy Digital. Each vendor brought different and intriguing items to showcase in the pavilion area of Swenson Park. Homemade jewelry, customizable keychains, beverage cups, local honey, and face painting were just a few among the many products and services on offer.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this year's cookoff was Galaxy Digital’s revised design of the Spur swimming pool on display for the public. The work that was started by Argo Blockchain in 2022 will be redone and built from the ground up, according to Mike Wursthorn, spokesperson for Galaxy Digital.

“We want the pool to be sustainable in the long run for the members of Spur and Dickens County to enjoy,” said Wursthorn. As of now, Galaxy Digital is working toward identifying a local architect and contractor for the pool, after the previous contractors Argo had hired went out of business. More updates on the swimming pool will be available soon, Wursthorn said.

Sponsors supporting this year’s cook-off included Zapata Funeral Home, Rolling Plains Title of Texas, CanTex Roofing & Construction, South Plains Electric Cooperative, Texas Farm Bureau, Spur Security Bank, the Back Door Inn, Cap Rock Telephone, Happy Junk Company, Phebe Ellis-Roach, Thrive Mortgage, Neil Grant, Baird Private Wealth Management and the Vida Elkins Family RV Park.
