With less than a month to go before the June 25–26 event, organizers of the 4th annual Big Dog BBQ Cook-off, along with Spur Area Chamber of Commerce volunteers, are pumping up the programming to welcome the public back to Spur’s Swenson Park in full force.
Tops on the lineup of public events is a Saturday night barn dance featuring local favorites the Fabulous Sandbillies. Admission to the dance is free, thanks to support from City of Spur hotel-motel funding, but tickets are required.
Cooking teams continue to register, said cook-off organizer Betsy Arnold. With its schedule late in the annual season of International Barbecue Cookers Association (IBCA) competition, Spur’s event has become a favorite with cookers looking to boost their total points.
Spots still remain for volunteer tasting judges as well, for all four meats: steak on Friday night, and chicken, ribs and brisket on Saturday afternoon. Judges must be age 18 or older and must agree to a brief list of rules—but the rewards are a hefty sampling of a variety of top chefs’ offerings.
The Chamber will host a Burgers & Brats picnic in the park Friday night, so that locals and visitors can enjoy a tasty home-grilled meal at a nominal cost. Local musicians will be invited to join in a jam session as well. Saturday morning, the popular Spur Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market will be held in Swenson Park, featuring food items and merchandise.
To register a cooking team, sign up for a judging slot, or add your name to the list for dance tickets, or inquire about a market booth, visit the event’s social media page at www.facebook. com/BigDogSpur
Volunteers are also needed for setup, cleanup, and leadership of other related events. Those interested should email spurchamber@gmail.com for more information.
