A bookish October in West Texas

Two major book events last month showcased several authors from the area, for presentations and honors. The Lubbock Book Festival, held Oct. 15–16 at the downton main library in Lubbock, featured more than fifty authors from Texas and beyond, including inspirational writer Carrie Blair and novelist Barbara Brannon (as Will Brandon) of Dickens County. Among the presenters and authors, other familiar names in these pages were Teddy Jones of Friona, whose West Texas novels have been reviewed in The Texas Spur; and chuck-wagon cookbook author Natalie Cline Bright of Canyon, whose books are featured at the National Ranching Heritage Center.

Cline was also among the Western authors honored at the 19th annual Will Rogers Medallion Awards presentations in Fort Worth Oct. 28–31, in conjunction with Red Stegall’s Cowboy Gathering in the historic stockyards. The Will Rogers Medallion Awards honor books in a wide range of categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and more that deal with Western heritage or settings.

Cline and Brannon participated in the Red Stegall Trappings show, greeting guests and signing their books. Cline’s “Keep ’Em Full and Keep ’Em Rollin’: The All-American Chuckwagon Cookbook” took the gold medallion in the Cookbooks category, while Brannon’s “The Wolf Hunt: A Tale of the Texas Badlands” (writing as Will Brandon) received the copper medallion in Western Mystery.

Other Texas authors honored were S.J. Dahlstrom, Lubbock; Patrick Dearen, Midland; Preston Lewis, San Angelo; Carol A. Lipscomb, Fort Worth; Max McNabb, Ropesville; Phil Mills, Jr., Hudson Oaks; Charles Williams, Rowlett; Reavis Z. Wortham, Prosper; and Lori Bates Wright, Waxahachie.
