Books on blockchain available at the Spur library

The library has hosted a couple of very informative programs in the past week or so.

On October 9, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas gave a presentation on wills, probate, and other end-of-life documents. Everyone I talked to that attended that day said they learned something.

On October 14, Ryan Blake gave a very informative presentation on the differences between Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Both presentations were nicely done with the presenters answering questions from citizens of the community. Each also said they would be willing to come back if there was enough interest. Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas will be able to come back after the first of the year. Medicare’s open enrollment period is from October 15 until December 7, so if there is any interest we will try to get Mr. Blake back before then.

Argo Blockchain, a world leading cryptocurrency miner, is building a facility right here in Dickens County. What is a blockchain, you ask? What is cryptocurrency? Hopefully your questions will be answered with a few new books that either are available now or will be soon here at the library.

If your knowledge of the subject is as vast as mine then you will probably appreciate “Blockchain for Dummies” by Tiana Lawerence and “Cryptocurrency Investing for Dummies” by Kiana Danial. Another one that looked interesting is “Bitcoin and Blockchain Basis Explained: Your Step-By-Step Guide From Beginner to Expert in Bitcoin Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies Technology” (Investing for Beginners) by James Tudor. We will also be getting one for the children’s section. “Bitcoin: The Future of Money” (Kids Guide #5) by A. D. Largie and Sabrina Pichardo will be available soon.

New to the children’s section this week we have “Noodleheads Do the Impossible” by Tedd Arnold, Martha Hamilton, and Mitch Weiss; “Strange Planet: The Sneaking, Hiding, Vibrating Creature” by Nathan W. Pyle; and “Faraway Things” by Dave Eggers. For the ones who do their own reading we have a new chapter book and a new graphic novel. The chapter book is “Erik vs. Everything” by Christina Uss, and the graphic novel is “Besties Work It Out” by Kayla Miller and Jeffrey Canino. If your youngster is more into sports we have “Hoop Kings 2: New Royalty” by Charles R. Smith.

If you have ever driven to Post from Spur you have passed by what used to be White Top Package store. One of the owners of White Top was Clay Lindsay from Mason, Texas. His widow called the library a while back and asked if we would like a copy of her book, “Good Times: Clay Lindsay, A Good Man from Mason, Texas, The People Places and Events That Shaped His Life,” second edition.

A few minutes into our conversation I learned that before the Lindsays married Clay became friends with some of my relatives that lived in the Kalgary community, which was a few miles from the package store. Mrs. Lindsay said my Aunt Doylene always had a place at the dinner table for Clay when he was around. When we received the book there was a note telling me to read chapter 38. The chapter was about Clay’s friendship with them. My cousin Nan, who is now living at her family’s place in Kalgary, was quoted in the book saying that Clay Lindsay was like a member of their family.

Check it all out at the library.
