Spur met up with Valley Friday night for the first district game of the 2022 season. The action-filled battle between the Bulldogs and Patriots kept the fans on the edge of their seats, wrapping up with a Bulldog victory, 62–50.
As the rivals ran out of their respective tunnels and fans cheered, the atmosphere was set for the evening. The Bulldogs won the toss in the first half and opted to receive. The first possession of the game was a success. #11 Gunnir Bateman completed a pass to #50 Ian Tagle for the first touchdown of the game. #25 Kayden Martinez made the kick, for a score of 8-0.
Valley responded and scored but missed the kick, and the Bulldogs scored twice more, with #22 Cory Hamilton running 44 yards for a touchdown, and a successful kick by Martinez.
Valley would put the next points on the board. The Bulldogs finalized the first-quarter score with Bateman completing a pass Hamilton for a touchdown. The kick missed, leaving the score tied at 22–22.
The second quarter did not disappoint, either. As the battle continued, Valley would score twice before the Bulldogs scored again. Hamilton ran for a 24-yard touchdown, and Martinez made the kick. the Bulldogs trailed the Patriots 30–36, ending the first half.
Coming out from half, the Bulldogs had a different mindset when it came to stopping the Patriots. Valley received the ball first and scored, but the Bulldogs were ready to compete. #28 Ryan Davis returned the kickoff for a 47-yard touchdown. The Bulldog defense shut down the Patriots’ offense for the third quarter, but the Bulldogs were not finished. Bateman completed a pass to #15 Jaxen Zarate for the touchdown. Martinez’ kick was good to end the quarter 46–42.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the fourth quarter to finish the game. Davis ran 55 yards for a two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Martinez made both kicks, making the score 62-42.
The defensive game was great to watch amd the battle was a crowdpleaser. The Patriots would score one last time, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs prevailed, 62–50.
“I thought the boys showed a lot of fight in the second half,” said head coach Tate Clark. “We were able to shift the momentum. I told them in the locker room we were going to be a second-half team tonight, and we must finish the fight and they followed through.”
The Bulldogs will travel to Vernon Northside this week for the second game of district.
