Going into Friday night’s matchup the Spur Bulldogs were excited to reach area playoffs for the first time in nine years — but they were also anxious. The number nine Spur Bulldogs knew they were outranked by the number three, McLean Tigers, according to sixmanfootball.com.
There would be no Bulldogs victory this round. The 2019 team had a great run and played with lots of heart, but ultimately fell to the Tigers 54-8 when a mercy rule ended the game in the third quarter.
With a 7 p.m. game start, the Tigers won the coin toss and elected to receive. Scoring on their first drive, they made a successful kick to bring the score to 8-0.
Spur answered back promptly, with 9:18 still remaining on the clock, with Bulldog Ethan Parsons answering a Tigers touchdown with one of his own. William Hancock made good on the point after to tie the game at 8-8.
Despite strong runs by the Bulldogs, the Tigers scored again at 7:16 and 4:24, then with 12 seconds left in the quarter advanced the score to 32-8.
The second quarter began with the Bulldogs on the 30-yard line for 2nd and 20. Jacob Cole carried the ball downfield but was tackled. Despite Bulldog efforts to advance the ball, tackles, flags and incomplete passes resulted in the ball being turned over on downs to the Tigers.
On 1st and 15 with 7:30 left in the second quarter, the Tigers ran into the end zone for a touchdown, with no extra point gain, for a score of 38-8.
At 3:33 left in the second quarter, the Tigers made their way in for another touchdown and extra point for a score of 46-8. The Bulldog pack held their opponents back but with an incomplete pass at the buzzer to end the half.
In the third quarter the Tigers kicked off to the Bulldogs, who worked hard to advance the ball down the field. On 2nd and 10 with 9:02 remaining, Francisco Hernandez passed to Parsons, but the pass was intercepted by the Tigers, who ran it in for a touchdown. The extra point moved the score to 54-8, ending the game.
Job well done for the season, Bulldogs.
