The Bulldogs put another win away Friday by smashing the Screaming Eagles of O’Donnell 62–28.
Fans knew the Dawgs were something special during this game when #7 Nicholas Ortiz picked off the Eagles’ pass on their first drive on the Spur 4-yard line and returned the ball to the O’Donnell 44. The very next play #3 LeZhane Walker took the Bulldogs home for 6 points. The extra points were good when the kick by #25 Kayden Martinez went right though the uprights.
The Eagles would answer back when #10 Gage Garces took the ball 25 yards for the touchdown. But the Bulldogs’ #14 Juan Molina blocked the extra-points kick.
A little later in the first quarter Walker would stroll into the end zone from 6 yards out for the score, and Martinez’ extra-points kick was good. The quarter ended Spur 16, O’Donnell 6.
Walker would take another touchdown and Martinez would add the extra points to start off the second quarter.
Spur would score again in the second when #11 Gunnir Bateman passed to Walker for 42 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs would end the half with a commendable lead, 30–6.
When the third quarter started the Eagles’ defense came out fighting, but the Bulldogs overcame the pesky birds and continued to score points. Spur scored first when Bateman passed to Ortiz for a 30-yard touchdown. Martinez’ extra-points kick was good.
The Eagles’ next points came when #3 Juan Renteria ran for 66 yards to score.
Spur’s Bateman-Ortiz combo would strike again for another 32 yards for 6 points, with the extra-points kick by Martinez good.
For the Eagles, Renteria ran for 10 yards for the touchdown, and the extra-points kick was good.
Putting up the next Bulldog score was #22 Cory Hamilton, passing to Bateman for 38 yards. Again, Martinez’ kick was good for the extra points..
Walker would add to the Dawgs’ majority with a 22-yard run touchdown, and Martinez padded the lead for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles would score the last touchdown of the game, but Spur’s commanding lead could never be touched.
The Bulldogs go 4–1 in nondistrict play.
“I thought the boys played really well,” said head coach Tate Clark. “I admitted some coaching mistakes towards the end of the game that could have ended the game earlier. O’Donnell was a team whose offense puts you in bad spots if you’re not paying attention. But we handled it pretty well.”
Clark added, “Gunnir, Le’Zhane and Nick all had a tremendous game on the offensive side and Gunnir, Cory and Le’Zhane on the defensive side.”
The Bulldogs square off with Whiteface in this week’s Homecoming matchup, 7:30 at Jones Stadium in Spur.
