On its home field Friday night, the Spur Bulldogs came home to a near-capacity homecoming crowd and raced past the Whiteface Antelopes, with the mercy rule kicking in early in the third quarter.
The Antelopes won the toss and received the first kickoff but went three and out, and the Bulldogs took over on downs. The Bulldogs’ defense did a fantastic job of holding the Antelopes in check while the Dawgs scored at will.
Le’Zhane (Lee) Walker scored the first points, with a 28-yard run home. Kayden Martinez’s extra points kick was good, and the Bulldogs were off to the races.
Walker took the ball for a 55-yard race to score again. Following Martinez’s extrapoints kick, the dawgs went up 16–0.
Cory Hamilton would sprint for six yards to tack on another six points, and after another good kick by Martinez the quarter ended Bulldogs 24, Antelopes 0.
The Antelopes would strike first in the second when Ethan Kaufman ran for 60 yards, but the extra-points kick was no good. The Dawgs would answer back when Hamilton rushed 45 yards to score, and Martinez tacked on two more.
For the Antelopes, Kaufman scored for the last time with an impressive 60-yard gallop, but the extra point kick was blocked, and the doomed team had to settle for six points.
Walker would score the next twp touchdowns in the second quarter with a 26-yard rush, and the extra points kick by Martinez was straight though the uprights. Walker would again sprint for 10 yards, and the Dawgs would end the half 46–12.
When the team came out for the second half everyone was thinking Mercy Rule—and the Dawgs would fulfill the expectation by scoring twice early in the quarter.
Walker would add six more points, but the broken play for the extra points would end with Ryan Davis’ pass no good.
Hamilton would add the mercy rule points to end the game 60–12, with 8:54 left to play in the quarter.
Coach Tate Clark said that Le’Zhane Walker and Cory Hamilton both had huge games on the offensive side. “Ryan David stepped up with one practice and did a great job,” said Clark. “We were out of position with two starters out on injuries. I thought defensively we did pretty good.”
Walker was also honored after the game with the Silver Spur award, presented by the Spur Ex-Student Association.
Next Friday, the Bulldogs travel to Crowell to begin district play, against the Wildcats, who have lost their first four games.
