Ranked #13 and #12 in the state in Six Man Division 1 football, the Spur Bulldogs (1-1) hosted the Aspermont Hornets (2-1) in a district match-up at Jones Stadium.
A lot was on the line with this game, including a chance to stay in the hunt for post-season play.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first when Ethan Parsons rushed for a Spur TD with 8:43 left in the first quarter. William Hancock kicked the extra point to put the Bulldogs ahead 8-0.
But Aspermont came right back as the Hornets took the ball in for a TD with 5:14 left in the 1st quarter, made the extra points and tied the game at 8-8.
The Bulldogs showed a little razzle-dazzle for their next score. With 3rd and 16, Francisco Hernandez pitched to Parsons, who scrambled and completed a pass to Angelo Calyen, who ran the ball into the end zone for a Bulldog TD with 3:39 left in the 1st quarter. No extra points were made, so the score went to 14-8.
At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, the Hornets surprised the Bulldogs on 3rd and 26 as they completed a pass for a TD with 9:51 left in the 2nd quarter with a gain of the extra points and tied the game again.
On the next possession, an interference penalty against Aspermont put the Bulldogs deep into Hornets territory. Jacob Cole advanced the ball into the end zone but then fumbled; however, he recovered his own fumble for a TD with 7:41 left in 2nd quarter, and Hancock made the extra points and brought the score to 22-14.
The Bulldog defense held Aspermont on the next series of plays, and Spur took over on downs.
On 3rd and 20, Parsons took the ball in for a TD with 2:07 left in the 2nd quarter, and Hancock made the extra points for a score of 30-14.
The Bulldogs achieved a successful onside kick to the Hornets, who were unable to recover the ball. Le’Zhane Walker for the Bulldogs recovered the fumbled kick.
Spur moved the ball down ºthe field, and Parsons ran it in for a TD with 1:42 left in 2nd quarter. No gain of the extra points made the score 36-14.
When the Bulldogs then kicked to the Hornets, the receiver caught the ball and erred by taking a knee at the 11-yard line. This error shook the Hornets, and when they attempted to throw a pass from the 11-yard line, Zage Barron intercepted and ran it in for a Bulldog TD with 1:34 left in the half, and Hancock kicked a good extra point for 44-14.
Another turnover hit the Hornets in their next possession.
On 1st and 15, the Hornets attempted to get by the Bulldog defense, but Barron took advantage of an opportunity to strip the ball and ran it in for a Bulldog TD as the buzzer ran out on the half, without time for extra points, and the score moved to 50-14.
Spur started the second half with another onside kick, and this one was recovered by Hernandez. But they were unable to capitalize on this advantage, when a 1st-and-goal pass was intercepted by Aspermont.
The Bulldogs defense held and the ball was turned over on downs.
Spur took advantage of this opportunity, and with the ball at the 28-yard line, Parsons ran the ball in for a TD at 5:44 in the 3rd quarter; Hancock made the extra points for a score of 58-14.
The Bulldogs’ kick was returned by the Hornets to the 14-yard line. They advanced the ball down the field and scored with 2:58 left in the 3rd quarter. No extra points were gained, and the score was 58-20.
The Bulldogs answered with a touchdown with 1:02 left in the 3rd quarter, but no extra points were gained, bringing the score to 64-20.
As the 4th quarter began, Aspermont moved the ball down the field and scored a TD with 9:30 left in the quarter. The extra points attempt was not good, making the score 64-26.
The next touchdown by Spur ended the game due to the Mercy Rule of 45 points. At the 6-yard line, Parsons rumbled in for his 5th Bulldog TD of the evening with 7:29 left in the quarter; Hancock’s kick was good for the extra points, and the score was 72-26.
And the game was over.
The win brought the Bulldogs to 1-1 in district play. Friday night Spur travels to Hermleigh for another district game.
