Spur jumped out to an early lead in their Friday night game with the Ropes Eagles. In the opening kickoff, Jacob Cole took the ball in for a TD from the 2-yard line after a kickoff bobble, with 9:45 left in the first quarter for an 8-0 lead.
The Eagles came back with 7:57 left in the quarter without getting any extra points to pull within two of the Bulldogs, 6-8.
The Bulldogs added to their lead when Gunnir Bateman pitched to Francisco Hernandez, who then passed to Cole for a Bulldog TD with 0:26 left in the first quarter, 14-6.
After several run plays, the Eagles ran a dive for a TD with 8:10 and no gain of an extra point in the second quarter, advancing the score to 12-14.
The Bulldogs don’t rest, however, as Cory Hamilton dove into the end zone with 4:43 left in the second, as well as gaining the extra point, promoting the score to 22-12, a lead they took into the locker room at halftime.
Defense dominated on both sides for most of the third quarter. But with 5:07 left in the third quarter, Ropes rushed for TD but didn’t convert any extra points and made the score 18-22.
On the following kickoff, Cole received the ball at the 5-yard line and ran it all the way for a TD with 4:54 left in third quarter. A good extra point made the score to 30-18.
But Ropes was far from throwing in the towel. With 4:06 in third quarter, they scored again, converted the extra point, and brought the score of 26-30.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth quarter when Zage Barron ran the ball in for a TD. A good extra point made the score 38-26 with 9:06 left in the game.
The Eagles continued to stay in the game and scored a TD with 6:58 left in the fourth quarter, with a good extra point, and brought the score to 34-38.
On the Bulldog possession, Hernandez threw to Barron who then ran the ball in for a TD with 5:18 left in the fourth quarter, and Hancock gained the extra point on the play to advance the score to 46-34.
Then, the Eagles caught the Bulldogs off guard and ran the ball in for a TD with 4:17 left in the fourth quarter, not gaining the extra point, and made the score 40-46.
On the Bulldogs next possession, Hernandez threw a long Bulldog pass to Cole who was wide for a TD with 4:08 left in fourth quarter, and Hancock, with another good extra point, brought the score to 54-40.
That would be the final score of the game, as the Bulldogs went to 4-1 for the season. Their next game will be Friday, Oct. 4, the homecoming game versus O’Donnell.
