The final district game was
at home for the Spur Bulldogs Friday night, and the contributions of the senior players were recognized by fans, friends and family. But these players aren’t done. The Bulldogs’ 56-0 victory over the Rotan Yellowhammers provided the momentum for going into the playoffs.
The game got underway with aggressive defense by the Bulldogs as Beau Martinez recovered a fumble on Rotan’s first possession. Spur quickly converted the turnover into a touchdown on an Ethan Parsons’ run with 8:45 left in the first quarter. The extra point didn’t work out, and the score was 6-0.
Turnovers and penalties plagued Rotan all night, as they turned over the ball on their next possession with a fumble.
The Bulldogs converted the miscue into a touchdown when Francisco Hernandez pitched the ball to Corey Hamilton, who ran it in for a Bulldog TD with 8:10 in the first quarter. The extra point attempt did not succeed, and the score was 12-0.
On the next Rotan possession, the Spur defense held, and the Yellowhammers turned the ball over on downs.
With the Bulldogs’ possession on 1st and 15, Parsons took the ball in for a Bulldogs TD, but due to a personal foul penalty, the score was called back. On the next play, Parsons still ran the ball in for the TD with 6: 25 left in the first quarter. Kayden Martinez’s extra points were good and advanced the score to 20-0.
On the next Rotan possession, Spur’s defense and Yellowhammer penalties stymied Rotan deep in their own territory. On 4th down, they punted from their own 2-yard line.
Spur took possession on the 26-yard line, and on the first play Parsons took it in for a Bulldog TD with 4:03 left in the first quarter. No extra points were made, and the score grew to 26-0.
When Rotan was back on offense, they turned over the ball on downs.
The Bulldogs gained possession of the ball at the 38-yard line. Gunnir Bateman pitched the ball to Le’Zhane Walker, who ran the ball in for a TD with 1:42 left in the first quarter; K. Martinez made the extra points, promoting the score to 34-0.
As the second quarter began, the Yellowhammers were unable to move the ball through pass plays and penalties, and the ball went over to the Bulldogs at the 24-yard line.
Parsons ran it in for a Bulldog TD with 8:54 in the second quarter, and the extra point was no good, so the score was now 40-0.
On their next series of downs, Rotan fumbled the ball and Spur recovered.
In Spur’s possession, Hernandez pitched to Walker, who ran the ball in for a Bulldog TD with 7:11 left in the second quarter. K. Martinez made the extra points and advanced the score to 48-0.
On their next possession, Rotan turned the ball over on downs.
A series of penalties on both sides of the ball caused Bulldog momentum to slow as they made their way across the field.
At 3rd and goal, Hernandez pitched the ball to Hamilton, who ran the ball in for a TD with 2:05 left in the second quarter; K. Martinez made the extra points and advanced the score to 56-0.
The Bulldogs kicked off to Rotan one last time, but the Yellowhammers were unable to score.
The mercy rule ended the game at halftime.
The victory placed the Spur Bulldogs at second in district and advanced them to the playoffs. The Bulldogs will be taking on Knox City at Guthrie, Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. for the bi-district playoff game.
