The Spur Bulldogs were the unexpected
host in Friday night’s game with the Meadow Broncos. Meadow was originally scheduled to be the site of the game, but electronic scoreboard issues moved the contest to Spur.
Despite home field advantage and a higher ranking in Texas Six Man Football, number 17 versus the Broncos’ number 60, the Bulldogs struggled with Meadow as the game got underway.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first as they charged their way through the Bulldog defense for a touchdown with 6:12 left in the first quarter, with no extra point, to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
However, the Bulldogs came back and answered with a TD via a pitch from Nicholas Cole to Ethan Parsons with 3:36 left in first quarter, knotting the score at 6-6.
The Broncos galloped back, aided by a series of running plays, flags and penalties for a touchdown with 1:00 left in the first quarter to take the lead 12-6.
The Bulldogs proved to be persistent, answering with another touchdown on a run by Parsons and extra point by William Hancock to give the Bulldogs the lead 14-12 with :40 left in the first quarter.
Spur held strong as the Broncos attempted to move the ball with :24 left in the first quarter when Parsons intercepted a Bronco pass.
Most of the second quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams. With just 2:46 left in the second quarter the Broncos finally slipped pass the Bulldogs for a touchdown to regain the lead 18-14.
But the Bulldogs came roaring back with a series of completed passes and reclaimed the lead with a pass from Parsons to Le’Zhane Walker for a touchdown with 1:00 left in the second quarter for a score of 20-18. The Bulldogs even added to their lead when they intercepted a Bronco pass and ran it in for a touchdown with :38 seconds left in the second quarter, taking a 28-18 lead into the locker room at the end of the half.
The Broncos started the third quarter with a series of running plays culminating in a dive for a touchdown, bringing the score 30-28 with 6:22 left. The Bulldogs proved tough as Nicholas Cole received the kickoff after the Bronco score and outran all the Broncos for a Bulldog touchdown. The extra point was good to put Spur back on top 36-30.
For the rest of the third quarter the Broncos were unable to get by the Bulldogs, and Angelo Calyen sacked their quarterback, which turned the ball back over to our Bulldogs.
In a series of run and pass plays, the Bulldogs offense found pay dirt with a touchdown and an extra point, bringing the score to 44-30.
In the fourth quarter the Broncos overcame a series of errors and pushed their way into the end zone for a touchdown, bringing the score to 44-36.
But the Bulldogs came right back and into the end zone for a touchdown, with no extra point, to make it 50-36.
Meadow made one last attempt to score on a pass but were intercepted by William Hancock.
When the dust settled, Spur prevailed 50-36.
