The last time the Spur
Bulldogs were in a bi-district playoff game, most of the current players were in the second or third grade. Friday night this new generation made the most of a historic moment.
Knox City was the first on the scoreboard in the first quarter when they ran the ball in for a touchdown, made the extra point, and led the game 8-0.
Spur came right back. On 1st and 15, Ethan Parsons took it with 6:02 left in the first quarter for a Bulldog TD. The extra point was no good, and the score stood at 8 to 6.
The Greyhounds turned the ball over on downs in their next possession.
Spur scored on its next series when Francisco Hernandez passed to Parsons who then ran the ball in for a TD at 4:19 left in the first quarter. William Hancock kicked for a good extra point and made the score 14-8. Spur never lost the lead for the rest of the night.
Spur then kicked an onside kick which Nicholas Cole recovered. Then Parsons passed to Angelo Calyen for a TD with 2:32 left in first quarter. Hancock made another extra point and moved the score to 22-8.
In Knox City’s next offensive possession, Nicholas Cole intercepted a pass at the 19-yard line.
Spur moved the ball down the field, and with 9:46 left in the second quarter Cory Hamilton ran it in for a TD, with no extra point gained, for a score of 28-0.
Knox City turned the ball over on downs in their next possession.
On Spur’s next possession they ball was fumbled, and it was recovered by Knox City. The Greyhounds rolled into the endzone for a TD with 5:51 left in the second quarter, with a good extra point, and narrowed Spur’s lead to 28 to 16.
At 3:30 left in the second quarter, the Greyhounds converted another Bulldog fumble into a TD, with no extra point gained, and made the score even closer, 28-22.
The Bulldogs came back.
With 1:52 left in the second quarter, Parson passed to N. Cole for a TD with an extra point gained, and Spur took a 36-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Spur scored on their first possession of the second half. Parsons ran it in for a TD with 9:51 left in the third quarter, and with the gain of the extra point, the score was 44-22.
Knox City continued to make a fight of it. At 5:38 left in third quarter, the Greyhounds ran it into the endzone for a TD with a gain of extra point and moved the score to 30-52.
But Spur could not be stopped.
At 6:03 left in the third quarter, Hamilton ran it in for TD, with a gain of extra points, and made the score 60-30.
In the next Knox City possession, the Greyhounds attempted a pass but were intercepted once again by N. Cole.
With 4:35 left in the third quarter, Le’ Zhane Walker ran it in for a Bulldog TD, with a gain of the extra points, for a score of 68-30.
The Greyhounds answered with a TD with 3:37 left in the third quarter, with no extra point gained, for a score of 36-68.
But momentum continued with Spur, and the Bulldogs scored again on a Hernandez pass to Parsons, who then ran it in for a TD with 2:07 left in the third quarter. With no extra point gained the score was 74-36.
Despite being behind by six touchdowns, Knox City refused to give up.
On first and 15 the Greyhounds ran into the endzone with 0:57 left in third quarter, with the extra point walked in, for a score of 43-74.
Spur was ready to put the game away.
On their next possession Parsons ran into the endzone for a TD with 8:40 left; extra points made for a score of 82-43.
Knox City had one last possession, but the ball was turned over on downs to the Bulldogs.
On Spur’s possession, Hernandez passed the ball to Parsons, who then ran it into the endzone with 6:01 left in fourth quarter for a TD. No extra point was attempted because this made the score 88-43, and by the mercy rule this was the end of the game.
The 2019 Bulldogs are Spur’s first bi-district football champions since 2010. They will play McLean at Valley on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
