The Spur Bulldogs traveled to Jayton on Friday September 30, and they brought home a win. The final score for the game was 62–34.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the first half, shutting out the Jayton Jaybirds. In the first two quarters it was all Spur. #22 Cory Hamilton scored three touchdowns with 109 yards rushing. #25 Kayden Martinez made all three extra point attempts. Gunnir Bateman stopped the Jaybirds’ last attempt to score before the half with an incredible over-the-shoulder interception. The score of the first half was 24-0, with the Bulldogs on top.
Coming back after half, Jayton scored twice before the Bulldogs responded. With 6:53 on the clock, Cory Hamilton started the scoring for the Bulldogs, rushing 26 yards. Martinez’s kick was blocked, making the score 30-14. The Jaybirds continued to fight, resulting in their final touchdown of the quarter. Hamilton would score one more time with a 4-yard rush, nd Martinez followed with a good kick to make the score 36-22 at the end of the third quarter.
In the final quarter, the Bulldog defense allowed Jayton to score only twice, blocking both attempts for the extra points. Cory Hamilton would score three more touchdowns, with 113 yards rushing. Martinez was on target and made all three kicks. The final score was 62–34.
Head coach Tate Clark praised his team. “The boys came out firing,” he said. “We went through some struggles in the early part of the second half but found our rhythm again and finish the game. It was nice to see them able to find the groove again after a few bad plays.”
Next week the Bulldogs will be preparing for their Homecoming matchup. The week will start with the Junior High playing at Wellman-Union on Tuesday at 5:30.
Thursday evening and is filled with several activities.
The Class of 2023 will host a hamburger supper fundraiser at the Spur Community Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Following the supper, at Rickels Park the Homecoming Queen will be announced during the night pep rally at 7:30 p.m. followed by a bonfire at the baseball field.
On Friday, the pep rally will begin at 2:45 p.m. in the Spur school Dome, and the homecoming game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, the parade will begin at 3:00 p.m. To finish up the activities for the week is the dance with live music at the show barn.
