Spur’s Bulldogs (4–1) began district play last Friday in a nail-biter versus the Crowell Wildcats (0–4) at Dick Todd Field in Crowell.
SixManFootball.com had picked the Bulldogs to mercyrule the Wildcats. But a total of 168 total points scored by both teams made that a pipe dream.
Spur head coach Tate Clark said, “I felt offensively we got everything we wanted, for the most part. We found a weakness and were able to take advantage of it. Defensively we didn’t play horrible. We just couldn’t get them off the field on fourth down. We had a lot of mental errors on fourth downs that cost us. With that we are still 1–0 in district play and the district championship thought is still alive.”
The Dawgs struck first on the second play of the game when Le’Zhane Walker ran the ball home for six, and the extrapoints kick by Kayden Martinez was good.
For the Wildcats, Harold Chapman scampered for 48 yards to score. He would also kick the extra points to tie the score.
Walker would score again on a 43-yard scramble, but the 2-point conversion attempt by Ryan Davis to Walker was no good.
The Wildcats’ Chapman would sprint 7 yards to score again, and his kick was good to put the Cats up by two.
Walker would score again with a minute and half left in the first quarter. Martinez’ kick was good, and the Dawgs went up by 6. The quarter ended with Spur 22, Crowell 16.
The Wildcats scored first in the second quarter with Chapman passing to Austin Hernandez for 20 yards. Chapman’s extra points kick was good.
For the Bulldogs, Walker would dash for 31 yards to score, and Martinez’ kick was good to put the Bulldogs back up on top 30 to 24.
Walker would score again from 39 yards; at the buzzer Martinez would put the ball though the uprights for two more and the Bulldogs went to the locker room ahead by 14.
Penalties and miscues plagued the Bulldogs in the third quarter. But the boys didn’t let it get them down, and they fought all the harder.
Chapman would pass 33 yards to Wildcats #2 for the touchdown, and Chapman’s extra point kick was good.
For the Bulldogs, Walker soon tacked on another six points with a 40-yard rushing touchdown. Martinez’ kick was good.
Chapman would answer back, taking the ball in from 25 yards and scoring for the Wildcats. His extra-points kick was good, to end the quarter Spur 46, Crowell 40.
Walker would score first to start the fourth, galloping 29 yards, and the extra-points kick by Martinez was good.
Cory Hamilton would race for 56 yards to add another six points, and the kick by Martinez was right though the middle of the goalposts, to leave the Bulldogs up 62–46.
The Wildcats’ Chapman would put the next two scores on the board with his points after blocked.
For the Dawgs, Hamilton scored the last points in the final minute to end the game in a squeaker, 68–60.
Spur goes into week seven ranked 18th by Sixmanfootball. com. This Friday night the Bulldogs will meet Vernon Northside at Jones Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The Indians are ranked 71st and come to Spur with a record of 0–6.
