HERMLEIGH — The Spur Bulldogs (2-1) took another step toward the playoffs Friday night, defeating the Hermleigh Cardinals 58-6 (1-2).
With the mercy rule, the game only lasted one half.
The Cardinals’ lone touchdown came on a 3-yard touchdown pass from junior Payton Rivera to sophomore Mateo Clement.
The game got underway with an Ethan Parsons’ run for a touchdown with 9:31 left in the first quarter. The extra point was not made, so the score was 6-0.
Incomplete passes, fumbles and flags derailed Hermleigh’s attempts to move the ball.
With 4:59 left in the first quarter Parsons ran into the end zone for another Bulldog TD, and William Hancock kicked a good extra point, advancing the score to 14-0.
Hermleigh’s only score of the evening came at 3:51 in the first quarter, and then the Cardinals attempted an onside kick which Spur’s Nick Cole recovered.
Despite a few setbacks with penalties and broken plays for Spur, at 1:52 left in the first quarter Parsons ran it in for a TD, and Hancock kicked a good extra point, promoting the score to 22-6.
During the next Hermleigh possession, on 4th and 12, Zage Barron intercepted a Cardinal pass, and was taken down at the 35-yard line at the buzzer at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter began with the Bulldogs on the 35-yard line. Cory Hamilton ran into the end zone for a touchdown with 9:24 left in the second quarter and no extra point was gained for a score of 30-6.
The Bulldog defense then held Hermleigh.
On Spur’s next possession at 8:28 in the second quarter, Francisco Hernandez passed to Hamilton, who then ran the ball in for a TD, and Hancock made the extra point kick which brought the score to 38-6.
Hermleigh turned the ball over on downs in their next possession.
On Spur’s next possession Parsons ran into the end zone with 4:19 left in the second quarter for a TD, and with no extra point, the score went to 44-6.
Hermleigh again turned the ball over on downs in their next possession.
Spur scored again on their next possession. With 1:52 left in the second quarter Parsons passed to Angelo Calyen for a touchdown, and Hancock kicked a good extra point and brought the score to 52-6.
Hermleigh continued to try to move the ball on their next possession. But at 3rd and 15 Hamilton intercepted a Cardinal pass and ran into the end zone for a Bulldog TD with :04 left in the second quarter. With no gain of the extra point the score moved to 58-6.
On the next Hermleigh possession, at 1st and 15 with the Cardinals on the 29-yard line, Hamilton intercepted another Cardinal pass, and was taken down at the buzzer to end the second quarter.
The mercy rule ended the game with a score of 58-6.
Spur’s final game of the regular season will be Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Jones Stadium in Spur, where they take on the Rotan Yellowhammers.
