The powerful one-two combo of Cory Hamilton and Le’Zhane Walker stunned the Meadow Broncos 65–20 before a hometown crowd in Spur at Jones Stadium in the Bulldogs’ home opener Thursday night.
Hamilton rumbled for four TDS and 184 yards, while Walker delivered three touchdowns and 127 yards before the game was ended by the mercy rule with 42 seconds still left in the first half.
All area six-man teams had to play Thursday instead of Friday night due to a shortage of officals, but the refs weren’t the only ones who were MIA from the field.
Head coach Tate Clark detailed for The Texas Spur how sickness had sidelined the Bulldog roster in key positions.
“We had our starting quarterback out because of being sick last minute. We had to put some kids in spots that we weren’t used to this year. Luckily, we have built some depth in our positions to overcome it,” said Clark. “The boys played their butts off last night.”
Clark continued, “It’s something to still end a game at half missing a starter and one of your best backup running backs. I am proud of how our boys have handled the season so far. From scrimmages to our first two games I feel like we have shown more aggression and physicality. The offense seems to be ticking better this year and we are getting there defensively. I’m proud of what they have done so far.”
Hamilton led the defense with six tackles—five of them solo—and three assists.
For their next football outing, which should be on Friday night this week, the Bulldogs will host the Motley County Matadors, a team that has a cross-section of football pundits predicting them to win the state championship in six-man Division II, for smaller schools. Spur plays in Division I, for larger six-man schools.
In the Matadors’ most recent game, they defeated Division 1 six-man team Knox City 68–22.
Clark’s final take on the Bulldogs: “We just have to keep improving each day and see where it takes us."
