The 70th Spur High School homecoming football game was a huge win in many ways. Not only did the Bulldogs win big, but the atmosphere was perfect. Friends and families gathered from near and far in the stands to watch the exciting tradition of Homecoming. The Bulldogs beat the Wellman-Union Wildcats 72–12.
The traditions continued as the Pee-Wee football players led the Spur Bulldogs out of the tunnel. The crowd rose to their feet with the playing of the fight song to cheer on their team. The hype throughout the week showed on the field as well as good sportsmanship.
The Wildcats won the toss and received the ball first, and the kickoff started at 7:30 p.m. sharp. The Bulldogs held the Wildcats’ first possession.
On the first offensive play, #22 Cory Hamilton scored with a fourteen- yard run, and the kick from #25 Kayden Martinez was good, making the score 8-0.
It was the Wildcats’ ball, but not for long. #28 Ryan Davis intercepted a ball intended for a Wildcat teammate, and scored. Kayden’s kick was good again. The Bulldogs continued to dominate the Wildcats the first quarter—and it was all Spur. #3 Josh Ortiz and #6 Ace Walker both scored putting points on the board for the Bulldogs, and Kayden made both extra points attempt. The end of the first quarter score was 46–0.
The second quarter started just as strong, with #3 Josh Ortiz completing a pass to #5 Preston Pafford for a 52-yard touchdown. The conversion pass for the extra point attempt by #11 Gunnir Bateman to #22 Cory Hamilton was good, bringing the score to 53–0. The Wildcats responded with a touchdown. The Bulldog Defense blocked the kick.
#7 Haden Howell completed a pass to #9 Jagger Zarate for a 47-yard touchdown, and Martinez kicked the extra point.
The defense held Wellman’s offense on multiple series throughout the game. Howell was not finished showing his skills. The next play, he completed a 20-yard pass to #21 JD Hamilton for a Bulldog touchdown. #8 Eric Maeurer’s kick was no good.
Wellman was not done fighting just yet; they returned the kickoff to score a touchdown on their possession.
The Bulldogs continued to dominate the offense, with #10 Margarito Pesina scoring with a 42yard run for a touchdown. Kayden’s kick attempt was good. The second quarter would end the game, with #52 Steven Hulme making a tackle in the end zone for a safety. The final score wrapped up 79-12.
The Bulldogs will have an open week this next week. Spur will be preparing for district play starting with Valley at home on October 21, 2022. Come out and support your Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.
