Busy spring season for Dickens County 4-H; county’s first-ever team competes in Meat Judging, takes 2nd place

In recent weeks, as Dickens County AgriLife extension agent Rusty Lanier reported April 12, 4-H groups have burned up a lot of miles traveling to a variety of competitions. “We had a great group of kids attend multiple contests,” said Lanier in the Dickens County Commission meeting Monday morning. “These kids found a huge amount of success at a variety of different competitions.”

One group took part in numerous livestock judging events, at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, in Clarendon, at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, at South Plains College in Levelland, and the Valley FFA invitational event.

4-H members included Porter Abbott, Jaxon Bateman, Josh Ortiz, Kimberlee Segura, Wade McGalliard, Erin McGalliard, Kylie Weiser, Allie Weiser, Grayson James, Calvin Chapman, Rylee Foster, Maddee Foster, Kendal and Kaygen Walker.

Kaygen Walker placed 2nd overall individual at Clarendon and 1st overall at Valley.

Kimberlee Segura placed 3rd overall at Clarendon, 6th overall at Valley, and in the top 75 at TTU.

Erin McGalliard placed 4th overall at Clarendon, 2nd overall at Valley, and in the top 50 at TTU.

Porter Abbott placed 3rd overall at Valley and 20th overall at TTU.

Wade McGalliard placed 38th overall at Clarendon, 9th overall at Valley, and 25th overall at TTU.

Josh Ortiz placed 26th overall at Clarendon, 11th overall at Valley, and in the top 75 at TTU.

Jaxon Bateman placed 8th overall at Valley, and in the top 75 at TTU.

Allie Weiser and Kylie Weiser each placed in in the top 75 at TTU.

Another group of 4-Hers represented the county at multiple district level contests, said Lanier. Two senior teams and one junior 4-Her competed at the district fashion show and Duds to Dazzle. 4-H members included Melania Ramirez, Diezel Ramirez, Tory Childers, Mackenzie Gardner, Bucki Smith, Jaydee Foster and Calvin Chapman.

Dickens County also had a group of juniors compete at the district meat judging contest, a first for the organization in this competition. Participants included Calvin Chapman, Maddee Foster, Rylee Foster, Grayson James and Allie Weiser; the team took 2nd place in junior meats.

Tory Childers, Diezel Ramirez and Melania Ramirez took 1st place senior team in Duds to Dazzle.

3rd place senior team went to Jaydee Foster, Mackenzie Gardner and Bucki Smith.

1st place junior construction and cotton award winner was Calvin Chapman.
