Congratulations to all of the graduating seniors. The next chapter of your life is waiting for you to pick up the pen and write it. For those of you who graduated from Spur High School, welcome to the elite group known as the best exes in Texas!
The weather this year has been interesting, to say the least. The February Freeze caused havoc with the power being shut off for days for many Texans. Spring came early. There were hail storms and tornados in March, continuing into April and May. Hopefully summer will not bring any surprises with it.
One thing summer will bring this year is the Collaborative Summer Reading Program back to the library. We are very excited to be able to bring these programs to the children of our community. Our new director of children’s programming, Kristy Price, has been working hard to make sure the children have a great summer. There will be prizes all summer, with a grand prize at the end of the summer for one lucky boy or girl.
There will be reading involved, so the boys and girls might want to head on down to the library and check out some of the new books
For ages 3–7 we have “The Octopus Escapes” by Maile Melay and illustrated by Felicita Sala. The octopus is happy living in his undersea world until one day he is captured by divers and taken to live in an aquarium. In the aquarium every day is the same and the octopus soon tires of the captive life. And so, under the cover of darkness he makes his daring escape.
For the age 4 to 8 group we have “The Rock from the Sky.” Merging broad visual suspense with wry wit, celebrated picture book creator Jon Klassen gives us a wholly original comedy for the ages.
“The Deepest Breath” is an accessible and beautifully written middle grade novel-in-verse by award-winning Irish author Meg Grehan about Stevie, a young girl reckoning with anxiety about the many things she has yet to understand.
For children ages 6 – 10 we have the illustrated chapter book “The 130-Story Treehouse: Laser Eyes and Annoying Flies” by the New York Times bestselling team of Andy Griffiths and illustrator Terry Denton.
For fans of graphic novels we have “Lightfall: The Girl and the Galdurian” by Tim Probert. This one is for 8- to 11-year-olds.
If your child likes to read biographies, we have “Epic Athletes: Zion Williamson” by Dan Watzel, described as “the inspirational story of the greatest basketball prospect of his generation.”
We have new books for mom and dad too. In large print fiction we have “Finding Ashley” from New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel. In this blockbuster novel two estranged sisters get the chance to connect again and right the wrongs of the past.
Check it all out at the library!
