Meet the new head coach of the Jayton-Girard Lady Jays basketball team, Kevin Chisum.
Chisum is no stranger in these parts, having taught high school math for four years in Spur and serving as the assistant boys’ basketball coach in his last year at Spur.
After Spur, he spent 13 years in Guthrie as teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. Chisum said he started assisting girls in all areas then moving to the head boys’ basketball coach while continuing to support all areas of athletics and academics.
In recent years he served as a loan officer of Capital Farm Credit in Spur. He returns to coaching in what could be considered a rebuilding year for the Lady Jays.
“We lost three starters from last year, but we have a lot of girls who are eager to step into those roles and compete,” said Chisum. “We also have some injuries that we’re battling.”
Top priorities for the Lady Jays, according to Chisum, will be “to get everyone healthy and be a hard-working team who displays high character. No matter the setting (athletic or otherwise), a lot can be learned from setting goals, putting plans in place to achieve them and being competitors. We’ll keep all of those things in mind throughout the year.”
1A basketball is always competitive in this area. In the past five years, the district has been won by Patton Springs, Guthrie and Spur with the Lady Jays of Jayton and the Paducah Lady Dragons usually making the playoffs.
Chisum describes the district this way. “Our district has been historically tough and next year is no different. Every team in our district has some talented athletes with great coaches leading them.”
A Girard resident , Chisum’s full-time position will include teaching and coaching. In addition to being the girls’ basketball coach, Chisum will also be the boys’ and girls’ cross country and tennis coach and will be assisting in all areas of the athletics program.
