Some twenty citizens turned out to an information session hosted by the Spur city council Monday evening, April 25, at the Spur museum to assess design options presented by pool donor Argo Blockchain.
Mayor Louise Jones led a discussion based on handouts that had been made available by Argo and that has also been presented in part the previous Tuesday night via PowerPoint.
Given three options for a swimming pool that would be safe and efficient, and that would be constructed inside the footprint of the existing pool in Swenson Park, after an hour’s discussion citizens favored the Argo-recommended option 1, described as an “8-inch deep tanning ledge roughly 8 to 10 feet in width followed by a drop off to a 3’6”-deep shallow end of the pool. The length of the shallow end will be dictation by the diving board and associated code requirements.”
While some confusion focused on the omission of a feature for steps and handrail for entry into the shallow end (this feature was noted in option 2), the consensus emerged for option 1 modified to include option 2.
None favored option 3, which measured 3’6” at the shallow end and 9’ to 11’ at the deep end, omitted any wading area.
Most in attendance were willing to forgo the option generously offered by Argo to provide a barbecue grill and a soft-landing play surface, since these woud be inacces sible inside the pool fence for the majority of the season.
“A decision will be made during a special meeting Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.,” read the city’s Facebook posting. “Anymore delays will determine when the pool opens.”
While delays have been minimal, Argo’s engineers called a halt after learning of the previous assessment of the ground beneath the existing pool had been shown to have voids. Ground-penetrating radar tests showed these to be minimal and remediable, but Mayor Jones and the council also deemed it prudent to get residents’ input on the overall design before resuming work.
“We’re going to have a pool,” she told Monday night’s group. “We’re still hoping it will be this summer, but if it has to be next, it’s more important that we get the pool we want.”
