The building committee for the new Spur Volunteer Fire Department headquarters is back on track after several months’ hiatus, with a construction contract signed July 20 with Lubbock-based Collier Construction.
According to committee member Wess Abbott, the team has worked with engineering and architects over the past several months to design the new 8,100-square-foot facility that will be located at Burlington Avenue and Third Street in downtown Spur. The committee had also overseen site pad preparation, using local workers, in early spring.
However, soaring material costs and product shortages created by the pandemic sent construction prices “out of sight,” Abbott said. More recent cost decreases and product availability have brought the project back in line.
According to Scott Collier of Collier Construction, the project should be completed in approximately eight months.
