Come along with us to Fort Morgan—virtually

For much of this broiling- hot summer in Texas, the temps north of here have been temptingly cool. Your Texas Spur editor and publisher have thought often about that after returning from our June trip to Fort Morgan, Colorado, and other points northwest.

We invite you to revisit that journey with us—and the lessons we learned along the way—at a special Armchair Travelogue progam at the Spur Senior Citizens Center next Tuesday evening, August 29. We’ll take you along with us through plains and mountains, across rivers and badlands, on an excursion through the history and culture of the American West, in image, narration and (yes) song.

But there was more to this trip than a muchneeded vacation.

Kay Ellington and I took advantage of being in the “neighborhood” of HGTV Home Town Takeover city Fort Morgan during our rambles. We reached out in advance to the city’s mayor, Lyn Deal, several local merchants who were featured on the show, and Fort Morgan Times editor Brian Porter to arrange visits.

Fort Morgan folks welcomed us warmly. We enjoyed ice cream at Mosqueda’s. We shopped at local boutiques. We dined in a variety of local restaurants. We walked their peaceful Prairie Maze. We gawked (and took selfies) at the city’s many colorful murals. We rested in their inviting downtown park. We visited their Chamber of Commerce. At every point we had the opportunity to ask questions about how this all came together for their town, and how they were able to capitalize on their good fortune.

And what struck us, as we trekked homeward, was—there’s nothing our tiny Texas towns couldn’t also do, on some scale, to bond as a community, build on our unique assets and attributes, and invite the world to come.

Let’s discuss. Send your thoughts and ideas to us at Spur@TheTexasSpur.com. But better yet, come support the Senior Center’s fundraising dinner August 29, and let’s converse in person.
