Created in 2005 by Senate Bill 920, authored by Sen. Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio and sponsored by Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson of Waco, the Texas Treasure Business Award Program recognizes the accomplishments of Texas businesses that have provided employment opportunities and support to the state’s economy for at least 50 years. The program pays tribute to the state’s well-established businesses and their exceptional historical contributions toward the state’s economic growth and prosperity.
The Dickens County Historical Commission (of which I’m honored to serve as vice chair) is reaching out to businesses in Afton, Dickens, Spur and elswhere in the county that might be eligible for this prestigious recognition, that helps bring customers and visitors in your doors.
We’ll help you with the research and application process. (Having applied on behalf of The Texas Spur newspaper, I have a bit of insight into what’s needed, and our CHC has jumped right in to brainstorm which of our county’s businesses might also apply.)
To be eligible for this award, businesses must meet the following criteria:
• Have been in continuous for-profit operation in the State of Texas for at least 50 years. (Nonprofits don’t qualify for this particular award, but we’re looking into whether cooperatives are eligible.)
• Continue to operate the same or a very similar type of business as it did at least 50 years ago.
• Have a continuous record of employment for at least the past 50 years.
• Continue to operate as an independent, for-profit business (i.e., it cannot be operating as a subsidiary of or have been absorbed into another business).
• Maintain a good business relationship with the State of Texas. Businesses that can also establish that they have been continuously owned by the same family or have operated continuously from a building that is at least 50 years old and has maintained its architectural integrity will receive additional recognition.
Award recipients and their sponsors will be honored by a presentation of a certificate in a suitable location determined by the recipient and the nominating party. If self nominating, a business is encouraged to contact the local senator or representative to participate in the nomination and award process.
Businesses can be nominated for this award by any elected state official or business representative.
If you’re reading this in any other Texas county, you may also look into applying; you don’t have to go through your own county historical commission, though over the years I’ve often seen their help in research and connections to be invaluable in the process.
