You’re Beautiful!
Style Show is coming Saturday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. to the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum.
The day will be a coming-together of models who are battling or have battled all types of cancer, their friends and supporters, and those who want to see spring styles and learn tips and tricks for best looks. Models enlisted thus far are from Crosbyton, Floydada, Idalou, Lorenzo, Lubbock, Post, Ralls, Spur, and Texas Tech.
This week we are showcasing Linda Cave and her great-niece Misty Smith.
Linda moved to Idalou in 1952 and never left, graduating from Idalou ISD in 1960. Linda had breast cancer, receiving the diagnosis on November 30, 2007. She had a partial radical mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy treatment for years. On August 8, 2008 she had the other breast removed. She attributes three special people for getting her through the process, including her husband, Donald, her daughter, Kimbra Owens, and a very dear friend who later perished from cancer, Southern Bush. Her song throughout the process was “I Won’t Let Go” by Rascal Flatts.
Linda went to Jessie Lee Hair Design, graduating in 1960 and became a hairdresser. Later she began working at IISD and stayed for 30 years! She married her high school sweetheart, Donald, and they are marking year 61. They had two children, Wade and Kimbra; four grandsons; and two granddaughters. In her spare time Linda enjoys painting, playing bridge and watching sports, especially the Idalou Wildcats and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Her role models have been her mother, Lena Nitcholas, and two of her sisters, Vida Woodard and Ruth Turner. Her motto is, “Live life to the fullest, you are not promised tomorrow!” Linda said being a 14-year survivor has taught her to always accept whatever life throws at her, and cancer was no different.
Modeling with Linda will be her greatniece, Misty Smith, who grew up in Ralls, graduated in 1980 from Idalou, and now resides in Post. Misty has had breast cancer twice, in 2015 and 2019, resulting in a bilateral mastectomy. She also underwent radiation. The song that got her through was “Rise Up” by Andra Day.
Misty’s husband is Weldon, and they have a son, Kade. In her free time, she enjoys watching roping and following Kade to rodeos. She most admires her Aunt Linda Cave, who battled breast cancer before she had to fight it. Her motto is “Live in the moment!”
Both Linda and Misty will be modeling in the style show to inspire others battling cancer and their families. You don’t want to miss this amazing opportunity to encourage and support these battlers and survivors! The runway will be filled with models from across the South Plains, ages 22 to 102, who are battling or have battled all types of cancer. Spring fashions will be from Stuffology in Crosbyton and Tumbleweed Market in Ralls.
Men are welcome to celebrate with their wife, mother, sister or friend. Tickets are $20 and are a tax-deductible donation to the American Cancer Society. Purse Bingo will yield fabulous prizes— every ticket holder will receive two bingo cards, and additional cards may be purchased, three for $5.
