Dawson ISD superintendent Sheets named new JGISD head

Layne Sheets, current superintendent of the Dawson Independent School District in Welch, Texas, has been named the new superintendent for Jayton-Girard ISD. His first day will be Monday, May 3, and he was the sole finalist for the position.

“I can’t express how excited we are to part a part of the Jayton community,” Sheets said. “We got to meet with the board, faculty, staff and students in an assembly last week, and everyone was so welcoming.”

Sheets and his wife, Hayley, a speech pathologist, have four children: Brynn, a first grader, Martin, a fourth grader, Ruby, aged two, and Boone, eight weeks old.

A native of Muleshoe, Texas, Sheets earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University and his superintendent certification from West Texas A&M University.

He has had a 13-year career in education as a teacher, coach and administrator with schools in Slaton, Lubbock Estacado, Morton and Lubbock Coronado.

Since 2019 he has been the superintendent in Welch, in Dawson County, located halfway between Lamesa and Brownfield. Dawson ISD has an enrollment of 152.

“Dawson was great to us, and we will always be thankful for the opportunities they provided,” Sheets said. “But Jayton just seemed right. We thought about and prayed about it and are at peace with our decision.”

Sheets said he was familiar with Jayton and its reputation for a fine school system, and that’s what attracted him to considering the new position.

He added, “When you have that many people in a community (Jayton) working together for the good of the school and the kids, it just seemed like a great fit.”

Sheet said his early priorities would be “to start to establish relationships with everyone.”
