Two nearby West Texas powerhouses have been picked to be in the Top 10 in the state in 2021 by the bible of Texas gridiron coverage, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. And the predictions are especially interesting because with re-alignment, the two teams are now in the same district.
Last year’s Division II six-man state runnerup Motley County Matadors are joining the Jayton Jaybirds—who’ve been known to play a little December football—in the newly formed, District 7-1A.
Coach Mike Bigham’s Motley County Matadors went 11-4 in 2019 in their state runner-up pursuit and will be returning five lettermen on offense, and five lettermen on defense and began summer workouts Monday evening.
According to DCTF, here is the football guide’s pre-season picks for the Top Ten, D2 six-man teams in the state.

4. Richland Springs
5. Jayton
6. Blackwell
7. Strawn
8. Gordon
9. Groom
10. Grandfalls-Royalty
Coach Josh Stanaland’s Jayton Jaybirds went 12-1 in 2019 with their only loss to being to Blackwell in the state quarterfinals. The Jaybirds will be returning returning eleven lettermen and began summer workouts Monday evening.
Other teams in that district include Guthrie, Patton Springs and Southland.
