The Gamma Eta Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held its final meeting of the school year at the Lubbock Christian University Library. Thirteen members enjoyed a meal provided by the Lubbock Hostess Group.
Members observed the Founders of DKG at the meeting with a PowerPoint presentation. Facts about the 12 founders of DKG were noted, as well as special interests of each founder. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded May 11, 1929, at the Faculty Women’s Club at the University of Texas in Austin. The 12 founders were Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, Austin; Miss Mamie Sue Bastian, Houston; Miss Ruby Cole, San Antonio; Miss Mabel Grizzard, Waxahachie; Dr. Anna Hiss, Austin; Miss Ray King, Fort Worth; Miss Sue King, Fort Worth; Dr. Helen Koch, Austin; Mrs. Ruby Terrill Lomax, Austin; Dr. Cora M. Martin, Austin; Mrs. Lalla M. Odom, Austin; and Miss Lela Lee Williams, Dallas. (All are deceased.)
The founders saw that there was a need for an organization in which rural and urban women educators—preschool to university; librarians; and school administrators—might be united to better professional preparation, recognition of women in the teaching profession and provide aid and scholarships for improving their professional preparation. Today, Alpha State Texas Educational Foundation (ASTEF) provides scholarships, leadership opportunities and stipends for projects for women educators in the Texas State Organization.
The program, Celebrating Our National Parks, was presented by Tiffany Harkins of Lubbock. Harkins’ program took a closer look at some of the lesser known parks: Samoa National Park, U.S. Territory; Saguaro National Park, Arizona; Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska; Zion National Park, Utah; and Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida.
Terri Egerton, president, called the business meeting to order. Debbi Ball of Spur gave an update on ASTEF; Janie Wigley of Crosbyton updated the members on the Media Print Award and the “Thank You Notes” project. Members were reminded of important upcoming events: Founders’ Day Luncheon on May 1, 2021, and TSO Convention in Denton on June 16–19, 2021.
Gamma Eta will meet again in Spur, Texas on Monday, September 13, 2021, with the program presented by Debbi Ball titled “The Key of Understanding Tiny Houses.” All women educators in Cottle, Crosby, Dickens, Kent, King and Motley Counties are invited to attend.
