The Dickens Baptist Church at 314 Montgomery in Dickens disbanded last year due to dwindling membership.
However, the remaining church elders had another way that the building could serve others by gift deeding it to Dickens County in early March to be used as a Dickens County 4-H Center for the county’s youth.
According to Dickens County Judge Kevin Brendle, church elders Ken Brendle (the judge’s father) and Marie Mullins signed the church over to the county via a gift deed.
“It will be good for the 4-H,” the judge said. “The building has its own kitchen and a lot of room.”
The judge said the county will pay utilities and insurance on the building, and the 4-H will take of improvements and maintenance.
Appearing at commissioners court Monday, Ronda Dalton with the Dickens County 4-H said that the 4-Hers will have their first meeting in the building later this month, “as soon as we get the water turned on.”
The 4-H has a spaghetti supper fundraiser in May planned to raise some funds for enhancements for the building.
