The sheriff ’s election in Dickens County is now a threeperson race. Romero Rodriquez and Jerry Schmidt both filed for sheriff this week, according to Dickens County Republican party chair Jody Duggan. They join Jay Allen, who had previously filed for the sheriff’s position.
Other filings this week in Dickens County are Chris Horn for commissioner, precinct 3, and Stella Carter, justice of the peace. Precinct 3 is currently represented by Charlie Morris, who has said he will not run for re-election.
In Kent County, incumbent sheriff William “Billy” Scogin has filed with Democratic party chair Laci Scogin to run for reelection. Kent County Republican chair Kathy Owen told The Texas Spur that Turney Coulter has filed to run for county commissioner precinct 1 and that the incumbent, longtime commissioner Roy Chisum, has said he will not seek reelection.
In recent weeks, candidacy filings have begun rolling in for local offices on the March 5, 2024, primary election ballot.
In Dickens County, Rhonda Brendle has filed to run for Dickens tax assessor-collector. Jay Allen has filed to run for sheriff. Incumbent precinct 1 commissioner Dennis Wyatt has filed for re-election.
Incumbent tax assessor-collector Rebecca Haney has announced that she is not seeking re-election, while incumbent Sheriff Terry Braly has made no announcement to date about seeking re-election.
Texas Spur Country offices up for election for the next four-year term follow the statewide ballot structure (unless an officeholder was appointed mid-term and has to run in 2024 to complete the term associated with that office). On the ballot in every county in the state are the offices of sheriff, tax assessor-collector, county attorney, and commissioners of Precincts 1 and 3.
In the 110th Judicial District counties of Briscoe, Dickens, Floyd and Motley counties, District Attorney Emily Teegardin, who was appointed to complete the term of predecessor Wade Jackson, will be on the 2024 primary ballot. In Dickens County, Justice of the Peace Stella Carter, who was appointed one year into the term of predecessor Patti Hagar, will be on the 2024 primary ballot.
November 11, 2023, was the first day that candidates for county office could file for a place on the partisan primary ballot. All candidates should file a treasury report with the county clerk at the courthouse in their respective counties.
In Dickens County, Republican candidates will pick up an application from county chair Jody Duggan.
According to Duggan, who sent the following information to The Texas Spur earlier this week, the Republican County Chair will be available in the hallway of the Dickens County Courthouse to accept March primary candidate applications on the following dates: December 11, 2 until 6 p.m. As there is currently no Democratic chair for Dickens County, Democratic candidates can reach out to the State Democratic Party or the Texas Secretary of State for filing materials.
December 11, 2023, at 6 p.m., is the deadline for all candidates to file for a place on the primary ballot.
